  • - Highlight on Storage -

Some of the key issues confronting CIOs today. Quoting from research done internally by HDS, is that storage growth has become irrational and it is perceived as being not aligned to business performance.

In a typical large enterprise, two-thirds of storage costs are in the hardware, some 78 percent of the cost goes into Tier 1 storage, which is twice as costly as Tier 2 storage. Organisations are also running out of data centre floor space, besides addressing other issues like power supply management and cooling system.

In short, organisations may have hundreds of terabytes of storage capacities that are probably enjoying only as much as 20 percent utilisation. No wonder storage budgets are shrinking. Across the board, the problems persist-buying too much storage capacities, paying too much for storage (especially Tier 1 solutions), low utilisation, and containing data centres.

It's easier to just add new storage than to come up with solutions to find and reallocate capacity from the storage pool, Vendors too have some responsibility to shoulder, in that they would deliver new functionality in bigger, monolithic storage frames instead of incremental upgrades. Underlining all this is the fact that data is persistent-it's unlike processing power and bandwidth that can be turned on and off when necessary. Data persists for generations, and storage has to cater for this need.

To quote from research done by the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA),

The top five "pain points" CIOs face today.

·        Cost, price and managing total cost of ownership.

·        Managing growth and how to meet capacity needs moving forward.

·        The inability to effectively manage storage assets and infrastructure.

·        The lack of integrated and/or interoperable solutions.

·        Added to that is the increasing complexity of storage infrastructure.

Despite these pain points, the two biggest issues are on managing storage growth and data migration which naturally leads to Virtualising storage, so is it the answer?
